Pull Out the Stops: Go On A Mission Trip
They say there comes a time on a man’s life when he knows in his heart he must pull out all the stops, thrown down and commit himself to a risky venture. It’s as if the present moment comes to a screeching halt, the past becomes a distant blur and the future lights up like a neon sign, beckoning action. A short term mission trip may be one of those times for you.
How often has this moment of decision come to you? How many times have you held back and given it a rain check? How many of those “rain checks” would you now say, with the benefit of hindsight, were missed windows of opportunity you wish you had back?
How many times did you take the risk to step out and commit? Are you now glad you did?
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Jesus told a parable of two sons who gave a very different response to His call.
“What do you think about this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said ‘Son, go work in the vineyard today.’ His son replied, ‘I don’t want to!’ But later he changed his mind and went. The father went to other son and told him the same thing. He replied ‘I will sir,’ but he didn’t go.” (Matthew 21:28-31)
Jesus told this story to illustrate that in the end, actions speak louder than words.
Maybe this is why without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrew 11:6)
God loves it when we take the risk to step out and trust Him even when it looks like we can fall flat on our face (risking failure), demand too much of our time and energy (risking our leisure) or offend people (risking humiliation and rejection.)
Stories Around the Campfiire
Risk taking is a worthy venture if it is done to please God. With every risk taken, a story unfolds, and with God in the picture, that story always has a good ending. Imagine yourself someday around a campfire having a discussion with your children and grandchildren and dearest friends. What stories will you tell them? I daresay that these stories will be about times you took risks, stepped out, and saw God move in you, through you and in spite of you, for His glory.
